2. Maintain Your Cooling and Heating Systems

Cooling and heating systems that aren’t maintained regularly will eventually start using extra power to function. Aside from simple maintenance, make sure to turn the units off overnight or when you’re not at home. 

A few other simple tips to follow around heating or cooling include the following:

  • Keep doors to unused rooms closed to reduce the area needing to be cooled or heated.
  • Rather than use heaters, add extra blankets or use a hot water bottle. 
  • Close curtains earlier on a cold day to reduce the amount of energy needed to maintain a consistent temperature inside the house. 

3. Change the Way You Use Your Lighting

Lighting uses a considerable amount of energy. Unfortunately, it’s not something we can go without. But we can reduce the amount and the way we use the lights in our homes. Some user-friendly lighting tips include:

  • Separating your lights: If there are areas where one switch puts on several lights, change this to one light per switch. That way you’ll use less light.
  • Timers and sensors: Instead of having your outside lights on all night, consider switching to motion sensors and timers. That way the lights only go on when they need to. 
  • Energy-saving globes: Change old light bulbs to environmentally friendly energy-saving globes. 
  • Lamps: If you’re working in a specific area of a room, use a lamp with a globe of a lower wattage as opposed to the main lights.
  • Monitor use: The golden rule is, if no one is in a room, turn the lights off.

The kitchen is an area where a lot of electricity is used every day especially if there’s a big family to feed! It’s also the area we neglect to show energy-saving tips because we’re usually in a rush to get finished with cooking and cleaning. 

Some kitchen tips we often overlook include:

  • Stovetops: Keep lids on pots during cooking. This reduces the amount of energy needed. It will also speed up the cooking time!
  • Microwave: Try not to use your microwave to thaw or defrost food. Place your food in the bottom of your fridge to thaw during the day. 
  • Kettle: Using a kettle is more energy-efficient than boiling water on a stove. Another tip for your kettle would be to boil only the amount you need. If you’re making one cup of tea, there’s no need to boil the whole kettle. 
  • Dishwasher: Use the economy cycle for daily washing and be sure to fill the dishwasher when it’s full. This is also a great way to save water.
  • Fridge and freezer: Make sure your fridges and freezers are standing in a cool, well-ventilated spot away from the sun and oven to reduce power consumption. Always keep about a 5cm gap around your appliances for air to circulate. 
  • Laundry: Only run the washing machine on a full load. If clothes aren’t stained or dirty, cold water will be good enough to wash. 
  • Drying clothes: Only use your clothes dryer when it’s raining outside. On sunny days, use the washing line to hang your clothes. Sunlight is good for your clothes!
