Dos and don’ts of storing your leather bags in humid weather

Leather handbags and other goodies are the pinnacles of high street fashion. These items withstand the ever-changing climate of the fashion industry. Therefore your leather goods should last you a long time. However, leather is a porous material by nature, and as a result, it is prone to a variety of damages due to humid weather. They can be ruined and covered in mould if not properly stored. This post will tell you the dos and don’ts of owning leather.

How to prep leather

After you buy a leather bag or a mens leather belt, there are a few steps you need to ensure before debuting them on the streets. Conditioning is the first step while taking care of genuine leather. It keeps leather from getting dry and helps to keep dirt at bay.

  • Simply wipe your belt down with a lukewarm damp cloth to clean it. Then wipe the leather with a dry cloth.
  • Then apply a small amount of conditioner to a dry cloth and rub it all over the bag, making sure to cover both sides. Allow your bag to air dry.
  • Remember to condition your bag sparingly; if you do it too frequently, you risk saturating it.
  • A leather bag must be cared for regularly to maintain its attractive appearance and rid it of odours. Neglecting simple belt maintenance can ruin its allure and even cause damage.

Dos and don’ts of leather

Leather has many characteristics that distinguish it from other materials. One of the most common characteristics of genuine leather is its ability to breathe due to its porous surface. However, this one-of-a-kind quality comes at a cost: it makes leather susceptible to severe damage during humid weather.

The moisture in the air increases during humid conditions, and leather absorbs or traps a lot. While not every drop of moisture is bad for leather, your leather mustn’t come into contact with too much moisture from the environment. Keep it stored in a dry closet.

You will decide how to store your leather purse safely. Unfortunately, this is something that the majority of people get wrong. Putting leather items in close proximity to other things or other leather items can cause severe colour transfer that can be difficult or impossible to repair. You should also avoid putting or stacking other items on top of your leather items when storing them. Finally, avoid placing leather items near windows that receive direct sunlight.

Leather will always require some moisture to remain soft, supple, and prevent cracking. While leather treatments are important for the overall health of the leather, knowing how to properly maintain and store your leather purse, especially during humid seasons is important. It will save you the extra expenditure that would have gone into leather restoration and repair work.

Here are some tips for keeping leather bags in good condition during the monsoon season.

  • Dry them thoroughly: Do not immediately put the bag away when you come in from the outside. Instead, allow the bag to air out for a few hours.
  • Too much heat is bad: Direct sunlight and extreme temperatures can harm your leather pieces. Never dry your bag near a heater or in direct sunlight.
  • Polish them well: Never skimp on the quality of the leather polish, as it protects the bag from moisture and restores the natural oil balance. Furthermore, it improves the leather’s natural shine and extends its life.
  • Store them properly: Before storing the bag next time, stuff it with newspaper to keep it from folding or creasing. Hanging your bags can cause them to wear out. Before putting them in a box, wrap them in a cloth and cover them completely. This will protect the bag from dust and moisture, especially in humid environments.
  • Allow them to breathe: The longer you wait to treat your leather pieces, the more difficult it will be to clean them. Remove your leather bag and allow it to air.
  • Using A Dehumidifier: It is best to invest in a dehumidifier for longevity. This gadget will help keep mould away and let you style the bag for a long, long time.
  • Clean the inside, too: Lint rollers are fantastic for cleaning the inside of your bag. However, the sticky side of the roller picks up dust and foreign particles as you roll it inside, which may cause your bag to smell.
  • Pack things carefully: If you carry liquids in your bag, it is best to store them in a different pouch. Likewise, store your makeup, hair products, and perfumes in a different pouch.

How to clean leather at home?

You can easily clean a leather wallet or a men’s leather belt at home. There are three ways to clean and maintain leather without professional restorations.

  • Clean the leather with baby shampoo. This baby shampoo has to be 100% natural. Mix a spoon of baby shampoo, 4 cups of water, and two drops of clear vinegar. Mix this concoction well. Wipe the surface with it and then dry it with a clean cloth.
  • Alternatively, you can also use untreated beeswax to polish old leather goods.
  • Cleaning the bag with essential oils is also a great idea.
  • Finally, you can use a professional leather conditioner or polish to seal in your handiwork.
