Factors to Consider When Deciding on the Size of Your Backyard Shed

Every house can use a little more utility space to make life more comfortable. When there is no more space in your home to store your equipment in your house, the perfect solution is to buy a shed. But the question is, how big should it be? You might say that it is a very simple question, but several factors may arise that you never thought of, making you regret the size of the one you bought.

But fear not because this article will guide you in buying the perfect size shed for all your needs. Below are some factors that you need to consider when determining the right size of your shed.

How will you use it?

When it comes to sheds, the first thing that comes into people’s minds is storage space. But recently, people are discovering that they can be used for other purposes too.

For example, you can set it up as your workshop, in which you’ll be needing shelves to store your tools and workbench.

But, you will need a big enough space to put all the tools and equipment. Remember that it is not only the length and width you need to consider but also the height.

If you are going to be spending long hours in the shed, it would be best to make it as comfortable as possible. So the shape of it will be an important factor too.

What will it hold?

As was said before, there’s no denying that its primary purpose is mainly for storage. So, if this is just what you want from it, you need to be mindful of what you want to store.

For example, if you would like to store a motorcycle in it or an ATV, then it would be best for it to be at least 12 feet by 10 feet.

Sometimes, people underestimate the storage space they need. One must not forget about the small things that will require space too. Think about the other household equipment like your gardening tools, lawnmower, hose pipe, vacuum cleaner or holiday decorations. Also, take into account the moving space that you would require for yourself while moving from one place to the other in the shed. You would not want to feel cramped when you are arranging your stuff.

Size of your Backyard

Another factor that you need to consider is the size of your backyard. A shed that covers a significant part of your backyard may not do justice to the investment as a backyard is also used for various other recreation activities.

Generally speaking, A typical 12 feet by 12 feet shed would be enough for a large backyard, while an 8 feet by 10 feet shed would fit well in a medium-sized one.

But other than the structure itself, you will also need to think about the foundation of your shed too. Ideally, you would want your foundation to at least be 1 foot wider than its walls on all four sides. Aesthetics will need to be accounted for too. You wouldn’t want it to overpower everything in your backyard.

Community Regulation

You may have thought of the perfect size, but your local municipal authorities may have different norms regarding the usage of house space.  Make sure your shed is complacent with the building codes of your area. You might need a building permit if it’s a large structure. Since it is a separate building from your house, you may need to register it in your zoning and engineering office.

So if you are ready to buy a shed, make sure that you have appropriately considered the size keeping all factors discussed above in mind to ensure that you will not end up with a building that may not serve the purpose.
