How to Select the Right Toilet for Your Home

If you’re in the market for a new toilet, you might feel confused about where to begin. There are so many different toilets available, and each comes with its own pros and cons. So how do you know which one to buy? And what should you look for before making the purchase?

This article will answer those questions and explain everything you need to know so that you don’t end up flushing your hard-earned money down the drain.

The Typical Toilet Suite

Toilets come in many shapes and sizes, but most have three main components: a bowl, a tank, and a seat. The bowl is the part where you do your business; the tank is where the water for flushing comes from, and the seat is where you sit to relieve yourself.

These days, some toilets have additional fittings and features. Some modern toilets include heated seats, bidets, or even remote controls, but for the most part, these are the three main components you’ll find on just about every standard toilet on the market.

The S Trap, P Trap and Skew Trap – The Set Out

In addition to the main suite, toilets also have plumbing fixtures called traps. These are essentially the drainage pipes that carry wastewater to your sewage system. There are three main types of toilet traps on the market: S Traps, P Traps, and Skew Traps.

S Traps and P Traps exit from either the rear of the toilet or through the floor. This makes them ideal when you have plenty of space in your bathroom. However, if space is tight, you may want to go with a toilet that has the less common Skew Trap instead because this type of trap exits from either side on the bottom of the toilet and can save you a bit of space.

Water Inlets

A water inlet is a vital part of a toilet. It is responsible for supplying water to the bowl. There are different types of water inlets on the market today, but they all have one thing in common, they must be durable, reliable, and efficient. Water inlets are available in different shapes, sizes and materials, so it’s important to know what you need before making your purchase.

Toilet Designs

Toilet designs vary widely, from the simple to the luxurious and everything in between. Flush toilets are by far the most common type of toilet, and they’re also the ones that most homeowners are familiar with. Wall-mounted toilets are similar, but they hang from the wall instead of standing on their own legs. These kinds of toilets don’t take up any floor space like other models do.

Toilet Seats

There are a number of different seat designs that you might come across when shopping for a new toilet. Most toilets have a round seat, this is the least expensive option, but it’s also the least comfortable. These days, many toilets have elongated seats, which provide added comfort when sitting for a long time. Finally, raised seats are a great option for people who are particularly tall or who have mobility issues that prevent them from using the other two types.

Bidets and Smart Toilets

Some toilets also include additional attachments, such as a bidet, for example. Bidets spray warm water from a nozzle to help you clean your bottom. They are immensely popular in Europe and are often found in luxury hotels. These days, there are also expensive smart toilets on the market that can clean themselves, flush automatically, and some even have heated seats.

We hope this guide has helped you figure out what type of toilet you want to buy and what sorts of features you might be looking for. Remember, no matter which model you choose, be sure to call your local plumber for help with the installation of your new toilet.
