Perfect Potty Training

Potty training a puppy can be a time-consuming but rewarding process. It is important to understand that every puppy is unique and some may take longer to learn than others, but patience and consistency will help ensure a successful outcome. Below are some tips to help you get started.

  1. Schedule Regular Potty Breaks: Puppies have small bladders and need to go potty frequently, so it’s important to take them out regularly. A good rule of thumb is to take your puppy out first thing in the morning, after each meal, after play, and before bedtime. This will help them establish a routine and increase the chances of success.
  2. Choose a Potty Place: Select an area in your yard or a nearby park as your puppy’s designated potty place. This will help your puppy associate this specific location with going potty and make it easier for them to understand where they should go.
  3. Use a Consistent Command: When you take your puppy to their designated potty place, use a consistent cue such as “go potty.” This will help them associate the cue with going to the bathroom and make it easier for them to understand what you expect of them. In the beginning, say the cue after puppy has begun eliminating in a quiet calm tone. We do not want puppy to get excited and stop before finishing.
  4. Reward Good Behavior: Whenever your puppy successfully goes potty in their designated spot, be sure to give them lots of praise and treats. This will reinforce their behavior and encourage them to continue going potty in the right place.
  5. Watch for Signs: Pay attention to your puppy’s body language and behavior. They may sniff around, circle, or whimper when they need to go potty. When you notice these signs, take them outside to their designated potty place immediately.
  6. Consistency is Key: It is important to be consistent with your puppy’s potty training routine. This means taking them out at the same times each day, using the same command, and rewarding them for good behavior. It is also best to always use the same door to go outside. This will help puppy learn more quickly where to go when he needs to go.
  7. Supervise Your Puppy: While you are potty training your puppy, it is important to supervise them when they are inside your home. This will help you prevent accidents and ensure they are only going potty in their designated spot. If you are unable to have eyes on puppy, place him in a crate or ex-pen area.
  8. Accidents Will Happen: Don’t be discouraged if your puppy has accidents during the potty training process. Accidents are a normal part of the learning process and it’s important to clean them up promptly and thoroughly. Use an enzyme cleaner to remove all traces of the accident. Avoid punishing your puppy for accidents, as this will only confuse them and delay the potty training process. Never scold puppy after an accident.  It is not puppy’s fault that you did not get him out in time!  J
If you catch puppy in the act, you can calmly lift puppy up and go outside to the puppy spot.  If puppy finishes there…praise and treat.
  9. Stay Patient: Potty training a puppy is a process and it may take a few weeks or even a few months before your puppy is fully trained. It’s important to stay patient and consistent throughout the process.

In conclusion, potty training a puppy can be a challenging. It is important to be patient, consistent, and use positive reinforcement techniques to help your puppy learn where they should go potty. With these tips, you can successfully potty train your puppy and enjoy your well-trained companion for years to come.
